MOVE IT! by bike

Moving The World To A Greener Future

MOVE IT! by bike has been serving New Orleans by moving stuff since August of 2013 using a bicycle and a trailer that can haul 600lbs.

Laundary Day

MOVE IT! by bike was hired to move a washer and a dryer from one shotgun duplex to another.  The appliances were on the second floor and the path they must take at both places included a narrow twisting stairway.  The client's husband would help and so only one mover was hired.  Using a shoulder dolly the old appliances were moved from the apartment down the steps and in the front room of an unoccupied apartment where they will be sold.  Then the newer washer and dryer was retrieved from that same apartment to the place where the old appliances were.  This only took a half hour.

Out Of Storage

MOVE IT! by bike was asked to transport several pieces of furniture from a storage facility to the clients new apartment.  On the morning of the move both movers did not show up to work.  One was not answering the phone the other informed us they they were helping move a relative.  Fortunately we always have a sub standing at the ready but we had two no shows.  We lucked out when a mover showed up for his job interview and so we put him to work.

When we arrived the client had already taken the items out so all that was needed to be done was load them on the trailers.  A queen bed, entertainment stand, end table, and a home bar were transported to the client's apartment and moved in.  Unfortunately the narrow, winding and low ceiling stairway did not allow the box spring entry.  We offered to lift it up onto the balcony but the client decided to leave it by the curb stating it was old and he will likely get a new mattress soon.  All this was done in two hours.

Three Stops In Less Than Three

MOVE IT! by bike was called upon to move furniture from one location to two different locations.  All three of our trailers were used to haul everything to the first address.  After carrying in all the furniture that was to be delivered to the first address we dropped one trailer and took two to the second location.  This way the client did not have to pay for, at this point, an unneeded mover.  The rest of the furniture was delivered into a basement at another location about 3 miles away for storage.  The first move took 1:45.  The second an additional 0:45 for a total of 2:30.

More Than We Bargained For

MOVE IT! by bike was called to move a few things the day before the move needed to be done.  The client initially indicated that they needed to move a two bedroom house worth of things but later changed that to just a few things, a queen sized bed, a dresser, a desk, a coffee table and three chairs.  We also were told that another mover had quoted they could do the move for $97.00 and they were on a very tight budget.  With all this in mind it was figured that two movers could do the job in an hour and a half and with two movers the bill would be $120.00 but would try our best to do it for $100.00 and we were hired to do the job.

When we arrived the next day we were asked to move more than was described.  It was then that we knew that it would take longer than we had thought and it did.  One hour longer.  But we made a promise and we stuck to our $100.00 charge.  That ended up being enough to pay the MOVE IT! by bike movers but nothing for the business.  We were glad to help our client out and hope that they will steer some business our way.

Crash Course

A couple moving to New Orleans from Minneapolis hired MOVE IT! by bike to unload and move in their things from their rental truck.  All was set for October 1 at 4PM when they planned to arrive.  But things happen on the road and in this case the thing was a speeding car crashing into the back of the trailer they were pulling that was transporting their car.  Fortunately nobody was hurt but the trailer was damaged beyond use.  So after deciding to drive the car on to New Orleans along with the truck and untangling all the red tape of the accident report and insurance the couple were on their way but would not arrive until 7:45PM.

MOVE IT! by bike took all of this in stride.  One mover that was to be on the crew had another commitment at the later time so another took his place.  In the end the truck and their car were unloaded of their contents and carried into their second story apartment in an hour and a half.

Up And Over

MOVE IT! by bike was hired to transport a bed, a dresser, two night stands and some banners from the Super Bowl from storage to the clients house.  The distance was not far but we had to go over the Jefferson Davis Bridge.  Not really a challenge for us but was kept in mind when loading the trailers.

At the move in location we encountered a narrow U shaped stairway.  Everything went up easily with the exception of the dresser.  But when turned on its side and lifted up over the railing, we got it to where the client wanted.

The move took 2 movers an 1:30 to do the job.

Blow Out

We like to arrive early for jobs so we leave in plenty of time to spare.  But this time one of our movers did not show up and we waited for him until we could wait no more.  We would arrive in time if nothing happened on the way.  However, on the way to the move out location a tire on one of our bicycles blew out.  We carry patch kits and extra tubes and even emergency tire boots but we were in a hurry to get there on time we threw the injured bike on one of the trailers, hitched the two trailers together and pulled both trailers with one bike.

Fortunately on this move we would not need our trailers but used them to transport our moving equipment.  Our clients were moving from one apartment to another within the same apartment complex so most of the moving was done by cart.

It was a long walk from one apartment to another through a maze of hallways.  We moved a sectional sofa, two beds, a dresser, a book case, a TV stand, a lamp and a few other things in three hours.

The tire has since been replaced.

Assemble/Disassemble

MOVE IT! by bike was hired to assemble a headboard for a bed. Once assembled the client thought it was to big so we took it apart and carefully packed it back in the box so it could be returned. We hope to be called on again to assemble the next one.

Assemble It Now, Please

Shon had some used IKEA furniture in pieces in his apartment in the Quarter.  He was working on filming a reality show and did not have time to assemble it himself so called on MOVE IT! by bike to do it for him.  He had one day bed and a queen sized bed.

Unfortunately there were no directions.

Fortunately IKEA had directions online.

Unfortunately some parts were missing for the day bed.

Fortunately there were enough parts to make it a functional day bed.

Fortunately all the parts were there for the queen bed.

The job took 2:30.

Not a Taxing Move

Frank hired MOVE IT! by bike to move a few things on tax day, April 15th.  Specifically a full mattress set, a queen mattress set a sofa and a planter.  We were able to move it all in one trip in 1 hour and 22 minutes.

The planter at the unloading point after unloading the mattress that we put on top of it.  We wrapped the mattresses in tarps as we always do.

Turning A Corner

Adam hired MOVE IT! by bike to move some furniture from his former home to his new home that was located on the same block just around the corner.  Freddy and Katie moved several large items both with trailer and bike and by simply carrying the item to the new home.  Our moving equipment was deployed to make the move faster and easier.  The whole job was finished in two hours.

Rain Rain Go Away

It was raining but Jackie had a deadline so we had to go on with the move.  Jackie and her husband were selling their home and moving into a new home and needed some things move out to get the house ready to sell.  Our crew of Freddy, Mike, Adam and Katie were real troopers and got soaking wet while keeping the furniture dry but after the first run it was decided to rent a truck for the rest of the move.  So after much trouble with U-Hall Jackie finally secured a truck and moved three loads of furniture to their new place.

No Boxes Required

Lieiah had called on MOVE IT! by bike to move her and wanted to use us again for this move.  She took advantage of the free tubs we have for our clients to use.  A couple of days before her move, the tubs were delivered, she packed them and MOVE IT! by bike moved them to her new place in the CBD.  Later we picked up the tubs to be used by another MOVE IT! by bike client.  The move was from the 2000 block of N. Villere Street to the 900 block of Common Street and was billed $30.00.

New Additions

Carol contacted MOVE IT! by bike to assemble 7 pieces of furniture.  Carol and hubby are expecting their first baby in December and are getting their place ready for the new arrival.  Tim and Mike brought all the tools needed for the job including a moving blanket to use to build the furniture on so as not to scuff the pieces or the floor.  It took 9 and a half hours total over two days to assemble all the pieces and place them and adjust the doors.  Carol was billed $570.00

ReStore Buffet

Kalonda purchased a buffet table at Habitat For Humanity's ReStore and called on MOVE IT! by bike to transport it to her home.  At the store Chris helped load it onto the trailer and paused to pose for a picture.  Kalonda's house was not that far away and her buffet arrived rather quickly.  Kolanda was rehabbing part of her home and had the workers move the buffet into her home.  The whole move took less than an hour and Kolanda was billed $30.00.

Under Estimated

Shawnte hired MOVE IT! by bike to assemble her new office desk at her law firms new location.  I figured it would take around two hours for two people to put together so quoted her $120.00 for the job.  Our team arrived on time and waited for Shawnte to arrive to get started.  Once Shawnte arrived we got straight to work.  We soon discovered that parts were missing and determined that one box for the desk was not delivered.  So we assembled the hutch and the file cabinet which took three and a half hours.  At this point MOVE IT! by bike is going to lose $20.00 on the job because I am going to pay my guys what I owe them.  But we were not finished.  The desk was not assembled.  We would have to wait until the the missing parts of the desk arrived.  Two weeks later the others parts arrived and Tim (the owner of MOVE IT! by bike) put the desk together himself.  This way he would get the job done but not go to much in the hole on labor costs.  It took another 4 hours to put the desk together and mount the hutch on it.  Shawnte gladly paid the estimated $120.00 for 11 man hours.  She got a deal and I got an education on giving estimates on furniture assembling.

Out Of Africa

Anna was in Uganda and needed her things moved from the 6100 block of South Claiborne to the 2400 block of Broadway; so her cousin, Katrina, called MOVE IT! by bike to make the arrangements.  The two crew members that had promised to do the job did not show so Tim called Freddie and they stepped in to do the job.  It took two trips but Freddie and Tim moved a couch, stiffed chair, dining table, three chairs, a dresser with a mirror, a full sized bed, a desk and chair and a few boxes.  It took 4 hours and 30 minutes and Anna was billed $270.00.

Breaking Bed

Sheriann's boyfriend made an attempt to assemble Sheriann's bed but got a few parts in the wrong place and broke a few pieces so Sheriann decided to call in a professional.  Finding none, she called MOVE IT! by bike.  Actually we take things apart and put them back together all the time during our moves so assembling furniture is in our realm of experience.

With the assistance of Sheriann and Marichari (Shariann's Mother) we took the bed apart.  Sharon used Gorilla Glue and Gorilla Tape to repair the broken parts of the bed.  While the glue was curing we assembled the TV stand, the desk chair and the desk.  After that the glue was dry we put the bed back together.  The Gorilla glue along with the tape seemed to work wonders and made the bed whole and strong.  The whole job took a bit less than three hours and Sheriann was billed $90.00.
