MOVE IT! by bike

Moving The World To A Greener Future

MOVE IT! by bike has been serving New Orleans by moving stuff since August of 2013 using a bicycle and a trailer that can haul 600lbs.

Dreams For The Future

A GARAGE

I love the stories of businesses starting in a garage.  MOVE IT! by bike has yet to be in a garage.  Right now all our moving supplies are stored in my tiny apartment.  I tell visitors I have decorated in moving equipment chic and then we go sit on the porch because there is no room for two.  My land lord allows me to keep our bicycles in the hall way and trailers along the fence at the side of the house.  For every job I have to bring everything out, hitch the trailers up, check the tire pressure in all the tires, load our moving blankets, tarps, straps, bungie cords and other tools on the trailers, and place the signage on our trailers.  This usually takes an hour or two.  At the end of the day it all needs to be put away and there goes another hour or two out of my day.  How I would love to have a garage and avoid much of this.

In September of 2016 MOVE IT! by bike rented warehouse space in Midcity.  Our new location is more central than our old location so we can get to jobs quicker and easier.  There is just enough room for our three trailers so when we get another we may have to move again or store our trailers a different way.  But for now we are good.

A FLEET

So far MOVE IT! by bike has added one trailer and a bicycle to pull it, to our "fleet" each year.  The trailers we use cost just over $1,000.00.  MOVE IT! by bike uses Marin, Muirwoods 29er bicycles.  We have three that we have bought used.  Our trailers come from Bikes At Work and are customized for us to be wider than their normal trailer.  We are considering having our trailers custom built locally.

More trailers equals more can be moved.  My vision is to arrive at a house or business or office with enough carrying capacity to move everything in one trip.

MOVE IT! by bike has moved entire apartments and houses.  The way we do it now is to have two people each at the loading and unloading locations and three people (or more when we get more trailers) pulling the trailers with a load and coming back empty to do it again.  It usually takes a morning or an afternoon to complete the move.  With more trailers the time it takes for a move of this size will be far less.

DISTRIBUTING

There is a lot of congestion on the streets of our city in the morning.  A delivery truck blocking a lane of traffic just makes things worse.  MOVE IT! by bike's vision is to meet a truck with a fleet of our trailers in a less congested part of our city and transfer an order or two or three or whatever will fit on the trailer and deliver it to where it needs to go.  While these orders are being delivered, the truck can return back to the warehouse to do it all over again or deliver to a less congested area.  MOVE IT! by bike's trailers can pull right up on the sidewalk and keep the traffic lane open.
